Embracing Life on the Open Road: A Road Trip Journey with Spinal Cord Injury

Living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) can present unique challenges but should never limit one's sense of adventure and exploration. Taking a road trip is an exhilarating experience that allows individuals with SCI to break free from routine and embark on a memorable journey. With careful planning and a positive mindset, the open road becomes a gateway to new horizons. This blog post will dive into the top five tips for packing on such an adventure.

Today, I head to Washington D.C., with my mother in tow, for a 2-day event called Roll on Capitol Hill with United Spinal Association.  During this event, I will speak with Congressional Leaders about three main policies affecting the disability community.  I will be sharing my story and how these policies affect my life. Follow along on my IG or TT (@megs_hammond).

Tip 1: Plan Ahead and Make Reservations:

Meticulous planning is key when preparing for a road trip with a spinal cord injury. Research accessible routes, wheelchair-friendly accommodations, and attractions along the way. Booking your accommodations in advance ensures you have a comfortable resting place at the end of each day. Many hotels now provide accessible rooms with roll-in showers, grab bars, and wider doorways to accommodate individuals with mobility needs.

Tip 2: Pack Essential Medical Supplies:

Packaging all the necessary medical supplies to manage your specific needs while on the road is crucial. Make a checklist of items such as catheters, medications, wound care supplies, gloves, and any other supplies you may require. Ensure you have an ample supply of these items to last the duration of your trip. It is also wise to carry a medical ID card or bracelet, which provides vital information about your SCI, allergies, and emergency contacts.

Tip 3: Optimize Wheelchair Accessibility:

Your wheelchair is your most reliable companion on this journey. Before hitting the road, ensure that your wheelchair is in top condition. Check the tires, brakes, and other components to ensure they function properly. Just like you would get an oil change for your vehicle before a trip, so should your wheelchair.

Tip 4: Pack for Comfort and Convenience:

When packing clothing, select comfortable and easy-to-wear garments that suit the weather conditions of your destination. Consider layering options for temperature fluctuations and moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool and dry. Don't forget to pack adaptive clothing, such as pants with elastic waistbands or shoes with Velcro straps, which make dressing and undressing more manageable. Packing personal care items, such as toiletries, sunscreen, and any assistive devices you use daily is also important.

Tip 5: Embrace Technology and Stay Connected:

Technology has revolutionized how we travel, offering invaluable assistance for individuals with SCI. Make sure you have a reliable smartphone or tablet with internet access to assist with navigation, finding accessible facilities, and discovering local attractions. Download relevant apps like Google Maps, accessibility guides, and translation tools to facilitate your journey. Apps like iAccessLife and Parking Mobility provide accessible parking information. Keep your loved ones informed about your itinerary and share regular updates to ensure your safety and peace of mind.

Embarking on a road trip with a spinal cord injury is a testament to the resilient spirit of individuals who refuse to let their physical limitations hold them back. With careful planning and the right mindset, a world of adventure and discovery awaits. By following the top five tips for packing mentioned above, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable road trip experience. So, buckle up, hit the open road, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Bon voyage!
