This is how I: Get my Hair Done

It happened again.  Just as it does every six weeks.  THE GREY HAIRS ARE BACK! NOOOOOO!

*Disclosure: There are some affiliate links below, but these are all products that I highly recommend. I won’t put anything on this page that I haven’t verified and/or personally used. See my full disclosure statement here.

My hair grows fast.  It seems like it’s super fast.  But, every six weeks, I make my drive back to Wooster to get my hair freshened up by my favorite hairdresser, Bebe, at Just Teasin’.  She and I have been in our ‘relationship’ for like 11 or 12 years now. She always makes me look outstanding.

As I was thinking about this appointment, I found myself wondering how other wheelchair users get their hair done.  Do you transfer? Stay in your chair? A little of both? Avoid going to salons in general? I have no clue.

So

So, I decided to film my process.  We’ve tried some different things over the years and the more Bebe got to know me (and me her) the more comfortable we got trying different processes out.  We’ve perfected it at this point.

As you will see in the video, I do stay in my chair for the majority of the appointment, but I do transfer into the chair in front of the sink.  With their current set up, it’s a pretty level transfer for me, which is super easy and I have no problems with it.

But

In the past, I have stayed in my chair for the entire appointment.  When it came time to wash my hair (and do my eyebrows), I would just scootch forward in my chair so I could lean back.  Then, the sink basin was able to move up or down to cradle my neck and it was a pretty comfy position.

My whole process is pretty simple, easy for me, and it works for both of us.  And, I hope it serves you in some way. I would love to know what other “This Is How I” video topics I should do.  So far, I have this one, car transfers, and sweeping/mopping my floors (which I just realized is only on my IGTV and not on Youtube – that will be fixed shortly).

Some products I would recommend

Since I am talking about my hair, I thought I would also talk about some of the products I love that I have found over the years.  I am really a minimalist when it comes to my products. I gravitate toward a more “hassle-free” routine than something with lots of products and steps.  The simpler the better.

I’ve tried many shampoos and conditioners throughout my years.  I have a LOT of really thick hair, so anything that can help smooth me out I will try.  What I have found to work the best for me is Matrix’s Total Results Mega Sleek Shampoo and Conditioner.  I don’t feel like it builds up in my hair and keeps it healthy, shiny, and relatively smooth.

Then, after my shower, I will sometimes put oil in my hair, but I’ve been trying out some samples and don’t use it often enough to recommend a certain oil.  After blowdrying, before straightening or curling my hair, I will use Chi 44 Iron Guard Heat Protector Spray on the layer I’m working on. Since I use a lot of heat on my hair, I use this as a protector and minimize the damage.

One of the last two products I use is Kenra Dry Oil Spray that will help keep the frizz down and also keep the flyaways at bay.  I will spray this on my hair before running my fingers through my hair, loosening up the curls. Finally, I spray a fine mist of Kenra Volume 25 Hairspray.  It holds my hairstyle without weighing it down, looking like I have hairspray in, or making it crunchy.
